CORNWALL, Ontario – Local boxing hero Tony “Lightning” Luis held a special training session at the Cornwall Civic Complex on Saturday, June 1.
The ring was setup at the centre of the Ed Lumley Arena for the Boxing for Change event happening that evening in support of the Children’s Treatment Centre, Big Brothers/ Big Sisters and Beyond 21.
“Saturday June 1 is our annual amateur boxing fundraiser with CTC. Since the ring will be set up that day, why not use it as an opportunity to invite the public out to get a glimpse of how training’s coming along for my title fight June 21,” said Luis in advance of the event.
Luis was in the ring with his father and trainer Jorge Luis of Champs Eastside Boxing along with other members of his school.
Luis and the other trainers had a few special guests stop in on their training, boxing legends Larry Holmes, Gerry Cooney, Michael Spinks and Ray Mercer. The four legends were in Cornwall as special guests for the Boxing for Change event.
When asked about the future of boxing in an age when concussions are more of a concern than ever before, former champ Larry Holmes said that boxing is as safe as it has ever been.
“If the fighter dedicates themselves, there are no health risks,” he said. “You have got to be concentrating out there.”
