CORNWALL, Ontario – History was made during the 13th annual Bishop Cup on Wednesday, Feb. 28.
For the first time ever, the Holy Trinity Falcons did not receive any penalties throughout the game. Coupled with a total of 10 minutes that the St. Joseph’s Panthers received, the game saw its lowest combined penalty time ever.
Also making history was the Panthers’ Braeden Levac who opened the scoring at just 41 seconds into the game, making for the fastest goal since the cup’s inception.
The final score was 7-4 for the Panthers. They claimed the trophy for the eighth year in a row.
“It’s a feel-good, bragging rights game between the East and West Catholic schools in the city,” said Thom Racine, Co-Founder and Organizer. “We’ve had some really good games over the years. I think every year when you get about a month away you get excited for it.”
Racine, who started the event inspired by the Boston Beanpot, said there were approximately 1,000 people in attendance during the game. All funds raised from the game go to the Society of Saint Vincent de Paul Food Bank.
Recently ordained Bishop Desrochers cheered for the Falcons but gladly awarded the cup to the Panthers’ captain and most valuable player, Lucas Bennis.
“The kids, they have fun playing…we try to make it a good event (for them),” said Racine. “As long as we can keep doing this, keep getting support from the schools…we will be doing this as long as I’m around.”
