CORNWALL, Ontario – Four teams geared up for a snowy game of slo-pitch on Saturday, Feb. 15 in effort to raise funds and awareness for individuals with autism.
“It’s going well. There’s four teams and there’s a lot of snow so it’s tough trudging out there but we are having a ball,” said Ritch Holland, event organizer with Slo-Pitch for Autism.
In preparation of the first winter Slo-Pitch for Autism tournament held in our city, members of three teams spent five to six hours snow blowing and preparing the field for play on Feb. 14, contending their efforts were all for a good cause.
“We run our tournaments all year long throughout the province; we are even out west and out east now. At the end of the year, the profit we have left in the business goes to families with autism,” explained Holland.
To date, Slo-Pitch for Autism has raised over $125,000 for families who may pay out of pocket for private, necessary services.
Recent provincial funding changes for children with autism have been highly debated by parents and critics. MPP Jim McDonell commended the changes, while local parents raised concerns in regards to the efficiency of the proposed changes.
“Funding is important but awareness is key,” said Holland.
