CORNWALL, Ontario – This August, the Cornwall Sports Hall of Fame will be inducting 12 new members.
The Hall of Fame selection committee is currently looking for nominees, with the deadline being Feb. 28.
“We are looking for men and women who have contributed to sports in our community,” said Thom Racine, a committee member. “It can be from 50 years ago, or more recent.”
The new main criteria for eligibility is that the nominee must be from Cornwall, or have lived here for five years, and they also have to have either been an athlete or a sports builder.
Past inductees include Lutt Bergeron Jr., who was a junior baseball player with the Cornwall All-Stars which won the All-Ontario Junior Championship. He also played softball, and was a coach on the ball diamond and on the ice for hockey.
Other inductees include Marc Crawford, who has coached teams in the NHL after a career with the Cornwall Royals, Cornwall’s old OHL team.
Racine said that it will likely be a highly competitive field, and that he expects over 40 candidates.
The committee hopes to meet the second week of March to discuss the nominees and pick the 2020 inductees.
