The 57th Annual Benson Cornwall Lions Club Sports Awards Dinner is fast approaching. The date is Wednesday May 15th at the Best Western Inn.
This is the Premier Sports Awards Event in the City of Cornwall. The RBC sponsors the High School awards for all high school sports. There is the Benson “Friends of the Round Table” award given to an individual for Lifetime Achievement, which very deservedly went to Kirby Camplin last year for his dedication to minor football. There are several bursaries given out during the evening, a Top Junior Athlete Award and finally, the Jacques Richard trophy for the Top Sports Personality of the Year in Cornwall.
Last year’s winner was presented posthumously to David Murphy, who was a fixture around the Cornwall Sporting scene as well as the MC for the Sports Awards Dinner for 14 years.
The guest speaker this year is Cornwall native Krista Seguin. Krista was a standout athlete at ES La Citadelle and then at RMC in Kingston. A leg injury during her time at RMC altered her career path. Posted on the west coast involved with the Pacific Fleet, she continued to participate in sports as a player and then coach. Her skill and dedication led to her selection for Team Canada and her participation in the INVICTUS GAMES (considered to be the “official Olympic Games for ill and injured armed service personnel”). Krista won a gold medal in Powerlifting. She now works with “Soldier On”, an organization which contributes to the recovery of ill and injured CAF members and veterans by providing opportunities through sport and recreational activities. Her message should be inspiring for all.
