Toronto police say one man is dead and two people were sent to hospital with life-threatening injuries after a downtown fire.
Police say a man in his 40s was pronounced dead in hospital after the fire, while two other people, including a man in his 70s, were taken to hospital with life-threatening injuries.
A Toronto Fire Services spokesman says crews were called shortly after 1 a.m. to a fire at an apartment building run by the All Saints Church.
He says about 80 firefighters responded and rescued several people from the building under heavy smoke, but the fire itself appeared to be mostly contained to one unit.
Fire services says the fire was put out quickly and the smoke had been cleared by later in the morning, when police say some displaced residents were allowed back in the building.
The cause of the fire is under investigation by Toronto Fire and the Office of the Fire Marshal.
