TORONTO — A 20-year-old man has been arrested and charged in a drive-by shooting that left five Muslim men injured near a mosque in Toronto’s east end earlier this year.
Police say the shooting happened around 1 a.m. on April 16.
Toronto police Supt. Steven Watts says an extensive investigation led to the arrest of the suspect on Monday and the man was found to be in possession of a loaded firearm at time of the arrest.
Watts says the shooting was targeted, but police don’t believe it was hate-motivated.
The accused was charged with five counts of attempted murder, one count of discharging a firearm with intent to wound, endanger life or prevent arrest and two counts of possessing a restricted or prohibited firearm without a licence and registration, along with other criminal offences.
Watts says the accused is currently being held in custody pending a bail hearing.
