CORNWALL, Ontario – A spokesperson from the Canadian Red Cross confirmed that they are offering help to 31 people who were displaced by the fire that began on Thursday night, July 26, 2018.

The fire began at two buildings on the corner of Alice St. and Montreal Rd. and eventually spread to Poirier’s Furniture next door. All three buildings were destroyed.

The Red Cross said that they will offer support to those displaced by the fire for up-to 72 hours and that support includes help with finding accommodations and vouchers for basic needs, like food.

Cornwall Fire Services were called to the scene of the fire at around 6:38 p.m. Twenty-Seven firefighters responded along with 10 initial fire personnel, two Fire Prevention Officers, a mechanic and a Fire Chief.

The Ontario Fire Marshal is investigating the cause of the fire. As of time of publication, Montreal Rd. is still closed from Louisa St. to Belmont St.
