SUMMERSTOWN, Ontario – The Summerstown Trails opened on a chilly morning on Sunday, Jan. 13, 2019.
Guests to the trails had the opportunity to try snowshoeing and cross-country skiing for free, and could expect a nice and warm cup of hot chocolate waiting for them when they returned.
New to hit the trails this season will be fat bikes. These wide tire bikes are made for treking across trails like the ones in Summerstown in the winter.
Friends of the Summerstown Trails (FOTST) Board member and fat bike enthusiast Joe McNamara said that this is a gteat opportunity to stay in shape in the winter and enjoy the outdoors.
“The fat bikes let me bike year-round,” said McNamara. “These trails are accessible and there is also one side that is more challenging.”
Additionally, the trails are now groomed, which McNamara says makes them even more accessible for the bikes.
“The fact that they are groomed now is wonderful,” he said.
Coming up next for the trails will be their Family Day event held in February. FOTST will be inviting guests to come to the trails to see a fat bike demonstration and get a chance to ride the bikes themselves for free, but guests are encouraged to bring their own helmets.
