CORNWALL, Ontario – October is Child Abuse Awareness Month and the Children’s Aid Society was at Au Vieux Duluth holding a fundraiser to send kids to camp.
All the money raised will send kids to camps of their choice who qualify for the program.
Money was being raised through a silent auction being held outside Au Vieux Duluth throughout the fundraiser on Wednesday, Oct. 18. Also throughout the day, customers to the restaurant paid through donation and all the money raised went directly to the Children’s Aid Society to help fund their camp program.
Items on auction included donated items from the Ramada Inn in Cornwall, the Cornwall Colts and the Cornwall Nationals.
Last year’s fundraiser raised $17, 000.
Servers were wearing purple shirts, the colour of Child Abuse Awareness month. Most of the servers were also volunteers and many were students.
Oct. 24 is dress purple day, where people are encouraged to go to work or school dressed in a purple shirt to raise awareness for child abuse.
“Child abuse is everyone’s business,” said Children’s Aid Society Executive Director Rachel Daigneault. “We need people to help us with reporting it.”
