CORNWALL, Ontario – The annual poppy campaign is getting underway and the beautiful red poppy’s will be available in hundreds of stores starting Friday, Oct. 27.
According to Clifford Merpaw, who has helped to organize this year’s campaign, volunteers will be making 12 runs starting on Friday morning delivering poppies and donation boxes to hundreds of local businesses.
This includes Gerry Grant, a World War II veteran who Merpaw says is very proud and feels that he should be involved in this campaign.
The poppy campaign will continue until Remembrance Day on November 11.
Thousands of poppies have been prepared entirely by volunteers from the Women’s Auxiliary. Merpaw says that he has ordered 100, 000 poppies for the Cornwall area.
Merpaw hopes that this year’s campaign raises $50, 000. Money raised by the poppy campaign will go to fund veteran’s charities and any left over would be contributed to community causes.
“To me, it is important in knowing that every time you pin on a poppy, that it is all going to support veterans,” said Merpaw.
