SOUTH STORMONT, Ontario – Bryan Haley was awarded with Pharmasave’s Outstanding Achievement in the Implementation of Pharmacy Programs and Patient Care Services for his Long Sault and Ingleside storefronts.
“It was really nice, I wasn’t looking for it,” said Haley. “I just really believe in the good that a community pharmacy can do… it’s always important to develop; we’re always tweaking our processes and trying to be progressive…and supporting different ideas.”
Haley won the award in September but was unable to attend the ceremony in Collingwood, ON. He was presented with it on November 6 and believes it is given annually to a provincial candidate.
“We implemented a lot of things within the last year,” said Haley.
Haley explained that his pharmacies introduced a Telemedicine Clinic, Travel Clinic, point of care testing and medication compounding within approximately the last year. MyDNA, a new pharmacogenomic test that determines how an individual processes different medications based on their genetic profile, was also developed.
“We are one of the first (pharmacies in the region) to incorporate that into our pharmacy practice,” he said.
“With all these different programs, I think it has a lot to do with my store culture,” explained Haley, who prides his business on handling change well. “We are constantly changing and evolving and I think that’s one of our secrets of success.”
Going forward, Haley is looking to specialize in smoking cessation with the chance of expanding into a certified tobacco educator. He is also looking into updating his pharmacy software to allow for better management, possibly implementing apps with automatic medication refill reminders for patients, as well as a secure, online method of viewing patient medication profiles.
