SOUTH DUNDAS, Ontario – On May 24, 2018 at approximately 7:11 a.m. Stormont, Dundas & Glengarry (SD&G) Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) officer responded to a single vehicle collision on Highway 401, South Dundas Township.
Investigation has indicated that a commercial rental truck was travelling eastbound on Highway 401 when, for reasons under investigation, left the roadway coming to rest in the center median near Church road overpass. The adult male driver (lone occupant) of the rental truck driver was uninjured. Officers located boxes containing unstamped, fine cut raw tobacco in the rental truck.
Further investigation revealed that a pair of vehicles (rental trucks) were travelling in a convoy and were heavily loaded with boxes containing unstamped, fine cut raw tobacco. Three adult males, aged 28, 31 and 35 years old from Brampton, Ontario were arrested without incident for Possession of Unstamped Tobacco.
SD&G OPP received assistance from the CRTF (Cornwall Regional task Force) which is a joint forces partnership that includes the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, the Ontario Provincial Police, the Canada Border Services Agency and the Ontario Ministry of Finance.
The three adult males were released and will appear in Morrisburg Court on July 3rd, 2018. RCMP Charges for Possession of Unstamped Tobacco, contrary to the Excise Act (2001) are pending.
14,662 Kilograms of tobacco were seized, with an estimated value of $1,319,580.00.
