NORTH GLENGARRY, Ontario – After eight years as Mayor and almost 20 years on council, incumbent Chris McDonell has decided to retire.
“It’s a young man’s job,” said McDonell. “There’s a lot of meetings. I enjoyed my time though. I had a good career at it and I think I did alright.”
Before his career in politics, McDonell was a police officer with OPP. He will miss working with the public as he enjoyed serving and bettering his community. McDonell worked in various positions within municipal politics since 2000, including acting as SDG Counties Warden in 2009.
One of the projects that McDonell is most proud of during his time as Mayor is the Maxville Water Project.
“It’s a $30 million project, its good for the area, good for the community and necessary for Maxville,” said McDonell.
McDonell is impressed with the work of his colleagues Sarah Huskinson, the Chief Administrative Officer/Clerk, and Kimberly Champigny, the new Treasurer and Director of Finance. He also thinks that Jamie MacDonald would make an excellent Mayor as he is always involved in community projects.
During his retirement, McDonell plans to help his brother by working on his farm.
“I just want to thank everyone for putting up with me,” McDonell joked. “The people were very good to me.”
