Man flees police, abandons truck and tobacco

CORNWALL, Ontario – Members of the Cornwall Regional Task Force (CRTF) seized 1,654 kg of tobacco on June 18 after tracking a vessel along the St. Lawrence River near Bainsville, On. 

After observing an exchange between an individual in the vehicle and on a boat, police attempted to intercede. 

Upon initial contact, a suspect fled the scene. Police later located a 1998 Chevrolet pickup truck containing 1654 kg of fine cut tobacco. 

Police are requesting the public come forward if they have any information on this crime. 

On the same day, a 50-year-old man was apprehended in Parc des Batisseurs in Valleyfield, Qc, for possession of unstamped tobacco, failure to stop for police and dangerous driving. His truck and 348 kg of fine cut tobacco was seized. 

The male, who is from Sainte-Agnès de Dundee, was released and is set to appear at the Valleyfield court house on September 27.

YOUTH, POSSESSION OF TOBACCO 

The CRTF arrested a 19-year-old male from Très-St Redempteur, QC and a 15-year-old female from Rigaud, QC for possession of unstamped tobacco on June 20. 

A total of 1,682 kg of fine cut tobacco was seized along with a cargo trailer. 

The 19-year-old male was released and is set to appear in court in Valleyfield, QC on September 7. The youth was released to her parents pending further investigation. 

“Congratulations to our task force on seizing over 3,500kg of contraband tobacco in 2 days,” stated Insp. Sue Black, Officer in charge of the RCMP Cornwall Detachment.
