CORNWALL, Ontario – The old Sears at the Cornwall Square will soon be no more.
Karen Burns, Retail Manager at the Cornwall Square said that sooner rather than later, the space once occupied by the outlet retailer will be torn down.
Sears occupied the top and bottom floors of the west wing of the mall, over 96, 000 ft2 in total.
According to Burns, while nothing is concrete yet, the owners of the Cornwall Square, Partners REIT intend to build high quality residential rental properties in the area currently occupied by Sears.
There is no word yet on how many units will be in the new rental property or the price range as those details are still being worked out.
The Cornwall Square opened in 1979 and its west wing was occupied by Sears until this past September.
The Sears location at the Cornwall Square was closed on Sept. 24, 2017 after the company, Sears Canada, went into bankruptcy protection. The Bankruptcy of Sears Canada cost 12,000 employees their jobs and threatened the security of their pensions as the company struggled to pay off its creditors.
