CORNWALL, Ontario – Students at St. Matthews High School were grilling some grilled cheese sandwiches as a part of a contest organized by Laurencrest Youth Services Inc. on Thursday, Nov. 23.
The grilled cheese competition was a part of Laurencrest’s Comfort Zone program.
“Comfort Zone is an after school program that provides a safe environment for youth to have fun and learn new skills,” said Melanie Sommerville of Laurencrest.
There were three judges charged with finding the cheesiest and most delicious sandwiches. The judges were Mr. Mac, St. Matthews Vice Principal, Cst. Andrew Arbic and Matt Drouin of Traeger Grills.
Drouin is a championship griller and has made everything from ribs to pie on his grill. He explained what he looked for in a good grilled cheese sandwich.
“It has to be cheesy,” he said. “I like properly golden bread, not too burnt and of course, served with confidence.”
The competitors were judged on three criteria: creativity, taste and presentation.
The winning sandwich would be served at Schnitzels European Flavours as a daily special with the student who made the sandwich given the opportunity to get some kitchen experience at Schnitzels.
The winner of the Grilled Cheese competition was Nathanyl Brown.
