CORNWALL, Ontario – The second annual Hockey Day in South Stormont takes place on Saturday, Oct. 28, 2017 at the Long Sault Arena and is in support of Carefor Hospice Cornwall.
The event will pit the South Stormont Local Heroes, which includes a team of firefighters, business men and friends against a team fielded by the RCMP.
The event starts at 1 p.m. and tickets are $7 for adults and $5 for children under 16 and proceeds go to Hospice.
Signing autographs at the event will be Yvon Lambert. Lambert won four Stanley Cups with the Montreal Canadians between 1976 and 1979.
Hometown NHL player Jesse Winchester will be playing with the team of Local Heroes and so will his two brothers, with his father serving as a coach.
Guests are suggested to check their game programs carefully. There are two kinds of game programs, one taht is $5 and one that is $1. The $5 programs will contain vouchers for prizes, including tickets to see the Cornwall Colts, Cornwall Nationals and Ottawa Senators.
Event organizer David Smith says that one thing he wants to emphasize this year is the involvement of women.
“We really want to push the fact that hockey isn’t just for men anymore,” he said.
The event will have a female trainer, linesmen, flag bearer and a coach Christie Tate, who is involved in local women’s hockey.
When asked why he choose to support Hospice this year, Smith said it was because Hospice helps so many and receives so little provincial funding.
“Hospice doesn’t discriminate,” he said. “Everyone is welcome and they treat everyone equally.”
