CORNWALL, Ontario – A fun filled day awaits as the creatures that live in our Ontario watersheds come alive when the St. Lawrence River Institute of Environmental Sciences and Ontario Power Generation celebrate the end of summer with some high flying adventure for the entire family with “Animal Mania”. If it has fur, feathers, or fins, it is on the agenda.
On Saturday, September 16, between 10:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m., the OPG St. Lawrence Power Development Visitor Centre in Cornwall plays host to raptors (of the flying variety) when Falcon Ed bring in their beautiful birds of prey. Other animal visitors will include the critters from Speaking of Wildlife, a very special Wildlife Education Centre that provides permanent sanctuary to non-releasable Ontario Wildlife. Many of the animal residents have been orphaned, abandoned, injured or have been kept illegally as pets and are now unable to live in the wild as they should. These creatures now make their home with Speaking of Wildlife, travelling across the province teaching audiences about the animals that we share our environment with.
Along with the large birds of prey from Falcon Ed’s demonstration team and the critters from Speaking of Wildlife, friends will be on hand from the Cornwall and Area Birding Club, the River Institute, and the Upper Canada Migratory Bird Sanctuary. Event organizer from the River Institute, Jeff Filion says, “We have planned this event for everyone who is curious about Ontario wildlife.” He adds, “Bringing in Falcon Ed and Speaking of Wildlife is a rare opportunity for all of us to see these amazing wild animals and birds of prey up close.”
Family workshops are free of charge and the OPG Visitor Centre also offers displays and interactive exhibits that describe the St. Lawrence Seaway and Power Project construction story and its effects on the nearby communities. Visitors can also learn and observe how OPG safely generates electricity at its nuclear, thermal and hydro generating stations located across Ontario.
