PRESCOTT, Ontario – Frank Dwyer is the Officer in Charge for the Marine Communications and Traffic Services with the Coast Guard and he hopes that more people from Cornwall would be interested in a rewarding career with his service.

Marine Communications and Traffic Service (MCTS) officers are the ones who respond to the mayday calls that get sent out by ships in distress on the St. Lawrence River, and they also direct and regulate vessel traffic along the waterway.

“It is the most satisfying work you can do,” said Dwyer. “Every once in a while, you get to make sure a husband or a wife gets back to their family.”

Dwyer said that the Coast Guard was looking for more MCTS officers for their office in Prescott, ON, and said that he was surprised that there are not more recruits from Cornwall, given the city’s proximity and the number of bilingual people living in Cornwall.

Dwyer said that the Coast Guard is recruiting for all of their stations, and that the Coast Guard pays for a recruits training which takes place on the east coast.
