The Handmade Array is a small business based out of Cornwall and SD&G. It was founded in 2017 by Ashley Barnhart, who specializes in knitted hats and accessories.
In addition to making and selling hats and headbands for babies, kids, and adults, last year Ashley started organizing markets to build a community of local makers and artisans. I asked her about the most fulfilling and difficult parts of organizing these events.
“Seeing our small business community come together and supporting one another plus getting to mingle with all the wonderful people I’ve met in general would have to be the most rewarding part of organizing these small events. Watching the vendors thrive and grow at each market is another one of my favorite aspects,” shared Barnhart, “The biggest challenge of organizing the events, oh boy. Probably dealing with getting the insurance sorted, handling vendor contracts, and permits.”
How it all started:
Before launching her business, Ashley picked up crochet as a hobby to help cope with anxiety.
“It really did help,” she said, “but then I ended up with an abundance of hats.”
Ashley was creating so much that she decided to put some items up on Facebook marketplace. They sold well, which inspired her to turn her hobby into a business! Since then, she has switched over to mostly knitting.
