First Choice Haircutters was at the Agapè Centre on December 19th for the second Free Haircut Day this year. To help everyone feel fresh and confident over the holiday season, seven hairstylists volunteered their time and did 77 haircuts for individuals and families using Agapè services.
The idea for Free Haircut Day originally came from an Agapè Centre volunteer and St. Lawrence College student who also works at First Choice. From there, they organized the first one in the spring of 2022.
“I think we’ll do it every six months and I think we’ll do it again in the spring before it gets hot out,” said Agapè Centre Executive Director, Lisa Duprau, “A lot of folks on a fixed income don’t have the extra $25 to spend on a haircut.”
Shannon Crowder from First Choice said it was a ‘fight’ to see what staff would get to volunteer, sharing that she had about four more volunteers willing to come than the space would allow.
“It feels so good to be able to give back to the community, especially with everything that has gone on with all of the sicknesses and COVID,” said Crowder, “We’re so glad that they invited us to come back and do this today. It feels good to look good, so they’re going to leave feeling amazing, but we get to leave here feeling even better. Its what we love to do and were so lucky and fortunate to have this opportunity.”
