At the Cornwall City Council meeting on November 12, 2024, Mellissa Morgan, General Manager of Human Services and Long-Term Care, alongside Lori Gibeau, Manager of Recreation, presented a comprehensive six-month update on the Cornwall Arts Centre’s construction progress.

Morgan highlighted the foundational work completed so far, including reinforcement of the existing walls and the complex elevator shaft installation, which represent significant milestones in the project’s timeline. “Certainly, you drive down Pitt Street, and you would think nothing is happening,” Morgan explained. “But you would have to go around back to see that things are indeed moving forward.”

Morgan acknowledged some initial delays, particularly with electrical installations, but confirmed that the project is back on schedule. “We’re pushing through the winter months to keep everything on track, aiming for a late 2025 completion,” she added, emphasizing the goal of minimizing any further setbacks.

Councillor Elaine MacDonald expressed her excitement about the visible advancements, stating, “The cranes have been a beacon of hope these past few months.” Meanwhile, Councillor Dean Hollingsworth raised questions regarding the budget impact of these delays, noting, “Every time things take longer, it changes the price tag.” Morgan responded that a more detailed financial update would be available by the next meeting. Mayor Justin Towndale chimed in that he hoped the number would be ready for the upcoming budget meetings, addressing Hollingsworth’s concerns about potential cost adjustments.

In response to community interest in supporting the arts center, the city’s website is also undergoing updates, including adding donation links and sponsorship information. As Councillor Syd Gardiner noted, the project is something the community is eager to invest in.
