CORNWALL, Ontario – Habitat for Humanity Cornwall & The Counties was excited to welcome a team from the City of Cornwall to the latest Cornwall Home Build site today.
The team of eight helped to install drywall among other work in the soon to be Leaf-Saucier home. This Team Build day was especially helpful for the Habitat construction team but there were also some fun and games to be had as well. Soon to be new homeowner, Owen Leaf, was also on hand to help the City of Cornwall Build Team and to share his thanks from his entire family.
The City of Cornwall has been a valued partner with Habitat Cornwall over the years, donating building lots, waiving development and connection fees, administering the Affordable Homeownership Program Grant and supporting the Cornwall ReStore. These considerations and more have made a truly positive impact for Habitat Cornwall and the greater community.
Habitat Cornwall Build Projects & Finance Coordinator, Joanne Mohamed, expressed her gratefulness to the City of Cornwall. “We wouldn’t be able to make these homes a reality without the support of our City. I am very happy that we were able to share the experience with them while also giving them a bit more information about what we do here at Habitat Cornwall.”
The Leaf-Saucier Family is facing overcrowding, safety, and privacy issues in their current residences. This new, safe, affordable home is being built on land which was graciously donated by the Mohawk Council of Akwesasne. “Any time the community is able to come together to able to contribute to safe, affordable housing in our region, we continue to be a part of the solution to a pressing problem.” Said Mrs. Mohamed.
Affordable home ownership is crucial to the sustainable development of our community. By working with community partners, like the City of Cornwall, Habitat for Humanity is able to continue to build strength, stability and self-reliance for local, low-income working families.
