After more than four decades of shaping local journalism, Rick Shaver, the long-standing co-founder with Dick Aubry, General Manager and Publisher of Seaway News, is set to retire. His career, spanning over 45 years, will officially conclude on April 25, 2024, marking the end of an era for the newspaper he has been part of since 1985.
Earlier this month, Shaver was honoured with a surprise retirement party, a festive occasion that gathered family, friends, and notable figures from the community to celebrate his storied career. Among the attendees was Senator Bernadette Clement, who expressed her admiration on social media, stating, “Rick, your impact on the newspaper industry and your commitment to your career is so exemplary. We will never forget everything you brought to our community and beyond! Happy retirement and good luck with your new adventures!”
A graduate of Business from St. Lawrence College, Rick Shaver is well-known not just for his leadership at the Seaway News but also for his extensive community involvement. His roles have included being president of the Kinsmen Club, member of the Cornwall General Hospital Foundation, Lift-Off board member and a former President of the Cornwall and Area Chamber of Commerce.
Rick’s dedication to the community and the newspaper industry was humorously highlighted during the retirement celebration, where attendees toasted and roasted the respected publisher. His daughter, Christine Burke, shared her heartfelt pride, “We toasted (and roasted) my dad, Rick Shaver. After over 45 years in the newspaper business, he is finally retiring. I’m so proud of him and what he has done for the community. The Seaway News will always have a special place in my heart.”
Reflecting on his expansive career, Rick expressed his sentiments about retiring, “My last day will be April 25. After 45-plus years in the newspaper business, it’s time to hang up the paper bag. With so many great friends, clients, and events, I had a good run!”
As Rick Shaver prepares to embark on his new adventures post-retirement, his legacy at Seaway News and his impact on the local community will surely be remembered and celebrated for many years. Farewell, congratulations, and Godspeed!
