Marion Hough (Helmer)
The family of Marion E. Hough(Helmer) regrets to inform you of her passing on April 6, 2020 at her Brockville home in the Wedgewood at the age of 95. Predeceased by her loving husband Lynden, parents Jennie and Erle Helmer (Winchester), brother Gordon & sister-in-law Frances Helmer (Ottawa), son Gary, brother-in-law Dean, nephew Brian.
Survived by her sons Gordon (Cheryl) and Douglas (Terri) Brockville; grandchildren, Jennifer Flake (Chris) (Kingston), Garrett (Brockville) Scott (Brockville), Jessica (Ottawa) greatgrandchildren, Tyler, Zachary, Emily (Kingston), sister-in-law Joyce (Cornwall), nephew Kevin (Kemptville), nieces & nephews Paula Helmer, Truda Baines (Ottawa), FN Alan Helmer (Inkerman), and Ian Helmer (Edson, Alberta) and their families.
Born in 1924 on Maple Ridge, Marion grew up in Winchester, graduated from Ottawa Normal School and started her first teaching job south of Avonmore in 1944 ($1000./year). An added bonus was meeting her future husband in the area and they married in 1946. The family moved to Finch in 1952 to start up Hough Bros. with brother Dean. As the business began, Marion “tended shop” along with all of her other family duties. As the business grew, Marion had more time to get involved in the Finch community. She enjoyed supply teaching at Finch Public School, NSDHS and evenually, Tagwi. She was a faithful member of Chalmers United Church(Finch), the UCW, and sang in the choir (she made sure her boys were scrubbed up and in Sunday School while Lynden cooked Sunday dinner at home and watched the evangelists on tv.). Marion was the last surviving charter member of Signet Chapter(Finch) OES (Ontario Eastern Star) and a Life Member in Winchester.
In her early years she had much success with public-speaking, winning several awards(some provincewide). She was never hesitant about taking a microphone or standing up to say “just a few words”. Fortunately she passed her talents for performing on to her greatgranddaughter Emily.
Her favorite award was more recent when she was made a Paul Harris Fellow by The Rotary Club in Chesterville (Oct. 2010), recognizing her years of community service and helping those in need.
Over the years, Marion and Lynden travelled extensively in Canada, the US and worldwide with friends, family, on business, and with the Shriners. Many wonderful memories and photos. They even managed 30+ years of winters in Florida.
Marion enjoyed knitting( 100’s of toques sent to Belarus), crocheting(every family member has a custom made afghan),writing: for the Rural Route, local history, Lynden’s speeches, eulogies, obituaries(could have used her help with this one), etc.. She heroically survived 3 bouts of cancer several broken bones and a few car accidents without complaint.
When she decided to move to Brockville 8 years ago we had many opportunities for family gatherings, reliving past events, revisiting photos of friends, family celebrations and travels. Having been through every album she would often say “How did we manage to do so much, have so many wonderful friends and such a precious family?” She was joyful about having had a full life rather than sad about leaving. Her goal was to reach 95 and we couldn’t convince her otherwise.
Thank you to family and friends who have been so caring and supportive over the years. The staff at the Wedgewood, nurses at Bayshore, Care Partners, the SE LHIN, Dr. Bhatt, have been amazingly supportive and caring. Thank you.
Due to current health limitations a celebration of Marion’s life and internment at the Finch Cemetery will be held at some future date. Notifications will be provided at that time. As expressions of sympathy, memorial donations to Chalmers United Church (Finch) or St. John’s United Church(32 Park St., Brockville, K6V-2G4) would be appreciated by the family.
