Daniel George Wheeler

Owner of Wheeler’s Independent Grocer and 1998 Brockville Citizen of the Year, passed away peacefully with family at his side at the Brockville General Hospital, Garden St. Site on Saturday, April 25, 2020, at the age of 80 years, beloved husband of Jenny (Koelmans). Daniel (Dan) is survived by his three sons, Andrew (Denise), Steven (Jyneen) and Robert (Laurie). Cherished ‘Poppa’ of Katelyn, Cale, Nathaniel, Hannah and Rachel. Also survived by his brother Brian Wheeler and sisters Nancy Yingling, Brenda Miller and Carol Angstadt, as well as by numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. Dan was predeceased by brothers Vince, Fred, David, Ray and Frank; and sisters Andrea, Anne, Kathleen and Irene.

Dan was well known in the community for his generosity and kindness. He will be remembered as the ‘Friendly Grocer’ who provided that ‘first job’ for countless young people in Brockville. Dan was on the Board of Directors at the former St. Vincent de Paul Hospital and was a dedicated member, and past president, of the Rotary Club of Brockville. A successful business man, Dan’s tireless work ethic and endless spirit for giving back to the community and persons in need positively impacted the lives of all who knew him.

Dan was a graduate of St. Lawrence High School in Cornwall where he starred in football and track and field. His passion for sports remained with him throughout his life and, regardless of whether he was playing or watching, never missed an opportunity to share a laugh. He developed a passion for genealogy and enjoyed sharing stories from generations past that will remain with us to be passed down to future generations. He especially loved spending time with family and friends including gatherings at his home on The River (“The Point”), adventures at the hunt camp, and trips to cheer on the Mountaineers.

We will always remember and cherish your laugh and wit that would brighten our days along with your unending generosity, kind heart, and love for family. We can’t thank you enough for being the wonderful son, husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, nephew, cousin, and friend that you were and will always be.

We would like to thank the BGH Palliative Care team for the care and compassion they provided Dan in his final days.

A memorial Mass and celebration of Dan’s life will take place at a future date when we can come together to honour his memory. Arrangements entrusted to the Irvine Funeral Home, 4 James Street East, Brockville.

As expressions of sympathy, donations to Operation Harvest Sharing (Food Bank) or the Brockville and District Hospital Foundation Palliative Care will be gratefully acknowledged.
