SOUTH LANCASTER, Ontario – Kayaks, canoes, and paddle boards made their way out to the 8th annual Paddle Poker Run for the Alzheimer Society of Cornwall and District, held at Hybrid Marine this Saturday, July 22.
With roughly 50 participants coming out to support the cause, the group surpassed their original goal, raising $9000 for the Alzheimer Society of Cornwall and District.
“It was the best attended and the most funds collected ever for this event,” said Campaign Coordinator, Josée Roy-Pilon. “We are very proud.”
Throughout the course of the event, paddlers were required to collect poker chips at three sites. Once all three chips were collected, they were given five cards to play poker with the option to purchase more.
The winner of the poker game received half the total pot, with the rest going to the Alzheimer Society. Alana Léger had the best hand with a full house, receiving half of the $354 poker pot.
Money raised throughout the event helps to support people living with dementia, as well as their caregivers. In addition to raising awareness for the disease, the event also helps to provide day programs for those with Alzheimer’s, and encouraging Dementia Friendly communities.
