SOUTH GLENGARRY, Ontario – Despite the harsh winter conditions, dozens bundled up to celebrate Opening Day for the Summerstown Trails.

Spirits were warm as patrons laced up to enjoy a day of snowshoeing and cross-country skiing along one of the area’s best-kept secrets.

“I’ve been coming here since I was 12 years old,” said Friends of the Summerstown Trails (FOTST) volunteer Carol Viau. “It’s the perfect vitamin, too. There’s nothing better than being outside and getting a good dose of Vitamin D.”

FOTST Board Member, Mary Lou Leroux has been coming to the Summerstown Trails for over 40 years and can remember a time before the trails were regularly groomed.

“People were coming in and making their own grooves,” said. “Now we have a wonderful group of volunteers who groom and maintain the trails. It’s fantastic.”

FOTST President, Jean-Pierre Tibi extended warm thanks to the township of South Glengarry for helping to create an additional parking lot for visibility and awareness.

“What you see here is an example of a very productive partnership between a township and a citizen’s group,” said Tibi, garnering a heavily-mitted applause. “This is just another step on a trail to bring the community together.”
