CORNWALL, Ontario – The Cornwall Legion welcomed over 250 guests to the annual Harvest Dinner in support of the Children’s Christmas Fund (CCF) this Sunday, Oct. 1.
Showing up with their appetites, patrons enjoyed a full turkey dinner with all the trimmings.
“It all starts when we get those turkeys in the oven,” said CCF Chair, Peter Morgan. “It’s been a busy day.”
Children’s Christmas Fund has been in existence for almost 70 years, with their main goal remaining the same: feeding those in need during the holidays. Through collaborative community initiatives, they hope to serve roughly 1200 families this year.
With under three months to go before distribution day, Morgan says that the Harvest Dinner provides a great deal of support to the charity.
“We printed out 280 tickets, and so far, we’ve sold at least 250,” said Morgan. “This is always a very successful event.”
While the support of local service clubs and public play a critical role in the success of CCF, Morgan says they project the total food cost to be upwards to $80,000.
“Applications for assistance are taken through the Salvation Army,” said Morgan. “All the food is delivered on Dec. 19, set up grocery-style, and people can come in and get their food.”
Morgan says that while there is a great deal of work that goes on before the big day, their objective makes it worthwhile.
“What it comes down to is trying to give children a better Christmas,” said Morgan.
