Have you ever played in a band? Have you always wanted to?
Cornwall’s New Horizons Band is always looking for new players to join them. The band plays a mixture of older and some new music and puts on several free shows throughout the year.
New Horizons International is a group that focuses on teaching music to beginners, often seniors who have never played or forgot how, and younger students who are interested in learning. As a new member, you’re invited to try out an instrument for a few weeks to see what you like before buying or renting one of your own (larger instruments like drum sets are provided).
The Cornwall chapter of New Horizons was started by Raymond Lacroix in September 2015. The group consisted of 8 members in the beginning and has been growing ever since.
“It gives people something to do when they’re retired, or their friends drag them here,” explained Music Director, Gilles Lepage, “It’s a good way to get out and socialize. It’s also a good steppingstone for anyone who wants to join the Cornwall Seaway Winds Concert Band.”
Cornwall New Horizons Band has three different groups: beginners’ classes take place on Monday, intermediate class is on Tuesday, and band rehearsal is every Thursday. Classes are located at St. Felix de Valois Church and CCVS.
In addition to practicing and playing locally, there are also events that New Horizons Band members sometimes travel to. Next month, for example, several members from Cornwall will be attending a week-long international music camp taking place at Mont Tremblant.
The New Horizons Band will also be performing at the Cornwall Square in front of the food court on December 10 and 17 from 11 am – 12 noon.
