CORNWALL, Ontario – The United Way Centraide of SD&G kicked off their inaugural Handbags for Heroes event this Thursday, Apr. 27 at the Civic Complex.
The evening, which appeared to be the first of many – featured a fashion show, handbag auction, and of course, wine.
United Way Executive Director, Lori Greer says she’s thrilled with the response the event has received in its first year.
“We’ve had an amazing response – the event sold out three weeks before the date,” said Greer. We were thrilled. To sell out so quickly in the first year makes it a success already.”
The idea to host this type of event came following the quest to find a signature spring to benefit the United Way. After much discussion and countless hours of brainstorming, the team finally landed on Handbags for Heroes.
“We have designer handbags that are up for live auction tonight, and every single one of those handbags represents one of the programs that the United Way supports within our community,” said Greer. “We’re a local organization, and all of our funds raised in SD&G stay in SD&G to support those who need it the most.”
Many local retailers were eager to get on board with the event, donating their clothing to be used in the fashion show. The models, however, were all from agencies supported by the United Way. As they came out, handbag in-tow, purses were auctioned off.
“It’s absolutely about fundraising, but it also has an element of awareness and education to it,” said Greer. “We feel it’s important to constantly keep putting the message out about what we do in our community, as well as why United Way is important and has impact.”
