CORNWALL, Ontario – This weekend, teams will be pedaling through Cornwall in support of the Heart and Stoke Foundation.
The 20-minute circuit will begin at the Royal Canadian Air Force Association (RCAFA) wing, heading right on Water, down to Cumberland and back.
Teams will consist of a maximum of 29 riders, equipped with music, noise makers, and a healthy dose of enthusiasm. In order to ride the bike, all cyclists must commit to donate a minimum of $50.
With cardiovascular disease being the leading cause of death for Canadian men and women, riders are hoping to do their part in the fight against heart disease by raising funds.
All proceeds raised through Big Bike will help support the Heart and Stroke Foundation, helping to fund critical heart and stroke research.
Program Coordinator, Kasie Glenn says that these kinds of events help, not only by raising money, but also awareness.
“It’s really the perfect fundraiser, because it promotes a healthy lifestyle,” said Glenn. “It gets people out and moving, even if it is only for 20 minutes.”
The event is set to take place both Saturday and Sunday Apr. 22-23, as well as a third ride on Friday Apr. 28 at La Citadelle, which will be the first time local high schools have been involved.
While the event’s main goal is to raise money for a worthy cause, Glenn says that it’s designed to be fun for participants.
“It’s a really great way for employees to come together, too,” said Glenn. “Physically, they have to work together, but I think it really goes beyond that.”
