Anyone who has travelled to the corner of Pitt and Second over the last few weeks cannot help but notice that there is a lot of activity at 159 Pitt Street.
In the spring, City Council approved the tender for construction of the Arts and Culture Centre; the Laurin Group out of Nepean ON was approved as the successful bidder and is currently hard at work.
The hazardous materials abatement portion of the project has been completed and the contractor is now busy preparing for the partial demolition to the building, within the coming weeks. It was always intended that the façade of the building would be retained and to that end a large steel structure has been erected on the Pitt St. boulevard to support the front façade while the existing building behind the façade has been demolished. In order to demolish the building while retaining the front façade, an engineered solution for stability was required. This support structure will remain in place until the new building structure in behind has been erected and is capable of supporting the façade. As the building demolition is completed the contractor will begin excavation work for the building basement, followed by construction of building foundations.
Many are looking forward to the new Arts and Culture Centre. In the post-pandemic, we will need the Arts & Culture Centre and its programming more than ever for our mental health and well-being. The Arts of music, dance, art, theatre, literature in many forms are the essential elements that help maintain the balance in our lives. It is the missing link that will make Cornwall a full-service, all-amenities community.
