SOUTH STORMONT, Ontario – On March 27, 2018 at 3:20 p.m. a Highway Safety Division (HSD) Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) officer conducted a traffic stop on Highway 401, South Stormont Township.
The vehicle was stopped and then failed to comply with the request and continued on Highway 401. The commercial rental vehicle continued on the Highway 401 travelling westbound in the eastbound lanes and collided with an eastbound passenger vehicle. The commercial motor vehicle then fled the scene of the collision.
The commercial motor vehicle was successfully intercepted by officers on Boundary Road, South Stormont Township.
The adult male driver (lone occupant) of the eastbound passenger vehicle was taken to hospital with serious non-life threatening injuries.
The wrong way adult male driver was not injured and was taken into Police custody.
The HSD Officer sustained minor injuries during the initial stop.
Cary CARRIERE (47) of Grand Falls, New Brunswick is charged with;
– Flight Cause Bodily Harm
– Dangerous Operation of Motor Vehicle cause bodily harm ( 2 counts)
– Obstruct Peace officer
– Assault a Peace officer
– Fail to stop at a scene of accident involving bodily harm
– Personation with intent to avoid arrest, prosecution or obstruct justice
– Fail to comply with conditions of probation ( 2 counts)
– Fail to comply with conditions of recognizance
– Possession of a credit card
He was held in custody pending a court appearance (bail) at the Ontario Court of Justice in Cornwall.
SD&G OPP and OPP Traffic Collision Investigators (TCI) processed the scene and investigated the collision.
A section (both eastbound and eastbound lanes) of Highway 401 between McConnell Road and Boundary Road, South Stormont Township was closed to traffic with indicated detours in place, but has since been re-open.
