United Way kicks off its 2023 Campaign with a thrilling new fundraiser

United Way Centraide SDG is partnering with Over The Edge and St. Lawrence Seaway Management Corporation to bring urban rappelling to Cornwall for the first time

Cornwall, Ontario (August 1, 2023) – The United Way Centraide SDG (UWC SDG) is excited to announce that it’s taking its 2023 Campaign launch to new heights with a new innovative community fundraiser. In partnership with Over The Edge and St. Lawrence Seaway Management Corporation, thrill-seekers will have the unique opportunity to raise money for a chance to rappel down one of the tallest buildings in Cornwall on Saturday, September 23.

The event will see a maximum of 90 thrill-seeking participants rappel 9 stories down the St. Lawrence Seaway Management Corporation building on Pitt & Second. Each participant must raise a minimum of $1,000 in donations for the United Way Centraide SDG to be eligible to rappel.

“We’re happy to be hosting this rappelling event in downtown Cornwall, all for a great cause! As an organization dedicated to supporting the United Way through our annual fundraising campaign, we couldn’t pass up the opportunity to participate in this fun and non-traditional fundraiser. Together, let’s reach new heights of giving and make a real difference in our community.” – Terence F. Bowles, President and CEO, The St. Lawrence Seaway Management Corporation

The 2023 Campaign Launch is a day-long event which runs from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the St. Lawrence Seaway Management Corporation building. Family, friends and spectators are invited to come down and support participants.

“We’re so grateful to partner with Over The Edge who has the expertise to execute this event safely and St. Lawrence Seaway Management Corporation who is letting us use their building,” says Juliette Labossière, Executive Director of United Way Centraide SDG. “Fundraising has been challenging over the past couple of years, but the need for community programs and supports has been increasing faster than ever before. We knew we had to do something innovative and fun to raise money to tackle poverty in our communities. I’m so excited about this fundraiser that I was the first to sign up to rappel! I hope more of you will join me.”
