Assisting Local Women to Attend University Since 1957

The CFUW Cornwall and District Club Scholarship Program was established 66 years ago to provide financial assistance to help young women who were graduating from high school attend university. This year the Scholarship Program reached two important milestones – over 400 women have been awarded scholarships, and the total Scholarship value awarded has reached the $100,000 mark.

In 1957 the first scholarship was awarded for $200. Since then, the CFUW Scholarship Program has expanded to award a scholarship to a young woman graduating from each high school in Stormont Glengarry Dundas (SDG).  Additionally, special Scholarship Awards have been given from time to time to mature students seeking to improve their lives and pursue post-secondary education. The value of the scholarships has also increased significantly over time.

CFUW Cornwall and District Club was founded in 1955 as part of a national organization working to improve the status of women and to promote human rights, public education, social justice, and peace. The establishment of the Scholarship Program by the local club was seen as an important element to enhance the educational opportunities for women within the SDG area. Our scholarship recipients have entered the fields of healthcare, education, science, business, and the arts, thus contributing to their communities and Canadian society. Information about CFUW Cornwall and District is available on our website –www.cornwallcfuw.com.

Funds to support the Scholarship Program come from the fund-raising efforts of the CFUW Cornwall and District Club, and generous donations by club members and the general public.  The club is a registered charity and tax receipts can be issued for donations. Please contact the Club through our website if you would like to donate or you would like more information about the club.

A major CFUW Scholarship fundraiser is planned for Saturday, July 22. Elaine Kennedy, a long time CFUW member and local community activist, is having a big Moving Sale, with proceeds going to the Scholarship Program. It will take place from 10 am until 2 pm at the corner of Archambault Road and Highway 138 – just two kilometers north St. Andrew’s West. We encourage everyone to show their support and maybe pick up a bargain or two!
