Cornwall, ON – This Summer, the Seaway Senior Citizens Club is rocking with brand-new special interest activities for adults 50+. Their downtown Cornwall Centre at 506 Pitt Street (corner of Fifth and Pitt Streets) provides important services, activities, events, and programs for hundreds of older adults in the Cornwall, Akwesasne, and S D & G areas. The Club goal is to promote creative and active healthy living for people over 50 years of age by offering activities within a friendly, inclusive, and inviting community.
Several new projects have recently been added to the Centre’s roster that will incorporate cultural excursions to and collaborations with Akwesasne. These projects compliment a brand-new series of summer workshops that include classic rock guitar, sketching, painting, wood carving, as well as organic gardening. The Club’s well-known musical abilities will also be showcased when their Choir, Steve E and the Pacemakers, takes to the Bandshell stage in Lamoureux Park on Sunday, July 23 at 2 pm.
On Tuesday afternoons this summer, between 1 pm and 3 pm, the public and Club members alike are invited to a series of special interest workshops covering a wide variety of topics. On Tuesday, July 25, conservatory trained classic rock guitarist, Gary Beaudette will host a “Getting into the Groove” session for interested guitar players of all levels. With decades of experience as a local professional musician and sound engineer, Gary will lead demonstrations with both acoustic and electric guitars followed by a Q & A session.
On Tuesday, August 8, the visual arts will be highlighted when local pen and ink and watercolour artist, Gaetan Saucier visits the Centre. An experienced graphic designer and fine artist as well as a regular on the Apples and Art Studio Tour, Gaetan’s art captures the nostalgic feel of local rural scenes and historical subject matter. This session will focus on the sharing of his artistic techniques through demonstration. Other workshops planned include organic gardening, wood carving, and local history.
Managing Director, Darnell Proulx says, “The Club mandate is to help enrich the lives of persons fifty years of age and over, by providing facilities for intellectual and social activities so that they may be part of a wider healthy and creative environment. “She adds, “For more than forty years the Club has successfully served older adults in the community by providing opportunities for friendship and community. The Centre continues to flourish because of the diversity and enthusiasm or our devoted members and volunteers.”
