CORNWALL, Ontario – The City of Cornwall has confirmed to Seaway News that their Green Ontario Program (GreenON) grant was approved before Premier designate Doug Ford announced the end of the program this week.
The program was funded through Ontario’s cap-and-trade program and was announced by the Liberal government in December 2017. Ford announced the end of the program on Tuesday, June 19.
Under the program, homeowners, businesses and municipalities could apply for grants and rebates for energy efficient improvements to their properties.
Potential rebates included Smart Thermostats, air source heat pumps, insulation, windows and solar project.
The City of Cornwall had applied for funding in late April through the GreenON program for retrofits to Marie de la Ferre Apartments in Cornwall and the Alexandria Non-Profit Corporation.
“The funding will allow for the retrofitting of light fixtures in common areas, lobbies, parking lots and outside apartment doors, and will also allow for roof replacement,” the City of Cornwall said in a press release.
Cornwall will receive $100,000 for both the Marie de la Ferre Apartments in Cornwall and the Alexandria Non-Profit Corporation. Of that money $23,000 will be spent in Alexandria.
Even though the program is cancelled, residents can still receive rebates if they have a signed agreement with a contractor and the work will be completed by Aug. 31, and if the rebate application is submitted by Sept. 30.
