LONG SAULT, Ontario – Woodland Villa Long-Term Care in Long Sault is the latest recepient of a trishaw provided through Cycling Without Age.
The trishaw is a bicycle with a two-person cart attached to the front. Residents and volunteers are being trained on how to use the tri-shaw and Janna Sabourin, Administrator of Woodland Villa says that some residents are already eager to take advantage of the service.
Sabourin explained that one resident in particular enjoyed being able to get a ride to the local sub shop in Long Sault for a sandwich.
Woodland Villa had a celebration on Tuesday, June 26 to mark the beginning of their new trishaw service.
Cycling Without Age was started in 2012 in Copenhagen, Denmark. Ottawa resident Gary Bradshaw witnessed the trishaw service while he was in Copenhagen visiting with his wife and decided to help bring the idea to Ontario.
“Every single resident that has been on this bike so far has had an experience,” said Bradshaw. “I hope you roll at least 1,500km by October.”
The trishaw itself is more than it appears, having an e-assist motor to assist the driver when going uphill.
Sabourin said that not just volunteers and staff, but family as well would be allowed to take their loved ones on rides through the Long Sault community. She added that the trishaw will be available for use all summer and into the fall.
Bradshaw stated that the City of Cornwall had also applied to Cycling Without Age for a trishaw of its own.
