CORNWALL, Ontario – Some of the City of Cornwall’s public pools have opened just in time for the heatwave.

Usually, pools would be open by this time of year, but their opening was delayed by a labour dispute between the City of Cornwall and some of their unionized employees. The strike ended in early June and City employees have been working to get the pools ready for use.

On June 30, three of the City’s five pools opened.

“There is a fair amount of repair work that needs to get completed each spring, and those repairs were delayed as a result of the strike,” wrote Jamie Fawthrop, The City of Cornwall’s Division Manager for Parks & Recreation. “We have managed to complete the necessary repairs to have the Mattice, Reg Campbell, and St. Joseph’s pool open for this past long weekend.”

St. Francis pool is scheduled to open tentatively on July 6 or 7 and Terry Fox is scheduled to tentatively open on July 9.

“Some programming at St. Francis and Terry Fox pools was originally scheduled to begin before the current tentative opening dates,” reads a post on the City of Cornwall’s website. “Patrons enrolled in these programs will be contacted by staff with a revised programming schedule.”
