GLEN WALTER, Ontario – According to the OPP, flares seen over the St. Lawrence River in the early morning of Juy 23, 2018 were due to a search and rescue operation.
In an interview with Cornwall Seaway News OPP Cst. Tylor Copeland said that a search and rescue team on the Akwesasne side of the river were searching for two swimmers.
The swimmers allegedly had attempted to steal a boat in the Glen Walter area, but were scared off by the owner. The two swimmers then tried to swim back across the river.
The OPP called in a C-130 Hercules aircraft from CFB Trenton and the aircraft dropped flares at around 4 a.m. over the river to help locate the swimmers.
The two men were not apprehended, but police were able to confirm their identities and that they made it across safely.
The OPP will now be conducting an investigation in to the alleged theft of the boat.
