CORNWALL, Ontario – For the first time in 25 years, OHL hockey was once again played on the ice at the Ed Lumley Arena in the Cornwall Civic Complex.
The Ottawa 67s faced off against the Kingston Frontenacs in a game that had people lined up in front of the ticket box and out the door, even well after the puck had dropped.
Opening the game with the ceremonial puck drop was former OHL coach Brian Killrea and Cornwall’s own Derek Grant.
Killrea remembered playing against Cornwall’s OHL team, the Cornwall Royals when he coached the 67s.
“The Royals were always a good and competitive team,” Killrea remembered.
Killrea felt that given the right amount of effort, that OHL hockey could return to Cornwall.
“It’s gonna take someone with enthusiasm to knock down the barriers to bringing a team here,” he said.
In the crowd for the game were many fans wearing old Cornwall Royals jerseys and waving Royals flags.
On the ice, The 67s won a hard fought exhibition game against the Frontenacs, winning 3-2 in an overtime shootout.
