CORNWALL, Ontario – Nick Haramis is a native of Cornwall, and he himself admits, that there are still many Haramises in the area, but his career path has lead him to the top of one of New York’s leading arts and culture magazines.
At 34-years-ol Nick Haramis now finds himself as the new Editor of Interview a New York art magazine founded by Andy Warhol.
Haramis explained in an interview with Seaway News that the path he took to get to where he is was a little unconventional.
“I didn’t have a traditional journo tract,” he said.
Haramis was a student at McGill and graduated as an English Lit. Major.
“I knew I was good at writing, but I didn’t know what type of writer I wanted to be,” he said. “I loved reading mags as a kid and wanted to a be a part of that scene.”
Haramis got his start in New York as an intern at Blackbook, from there, he spent some time at Bullett and then he went to the New York times where he became Features Editor.
He had some advice for people looking to get their own start in the industry that he learned from his own experience.
“I never took “no” for an answer,” Haramis said. “I knew if I was ever going to stay here I was going to have to make do.”
He gave an example of when his internship was coming to an end that he offered to stay on as Web Editor at Blackbook, despite not knowing anything about web coding, but it kept him in the door and in the industry.
He took the reins at Interview in March.
Interview was founded at the end of the 1960s and Haramis describes the publication as the “champions of the underdog in the world of art and fashion,” and as a magazine that celebrates both the high and the low.
