CORNWALL, Ontario – A name with a legacy in hockey in Cornwall has gotten new life. Those who grew up in Cornwall know the name Cornwall Royals quite well.
From 1969 to 1992 the Cornwall Royals were the Ontario Hockey League (OHL) men’s team that played in Cornwall, won three Memorial Cup Championships, and played a huge factor in Cornwall becoming known as a hockey town.
Now, the Cornwall Girls Hockey Association have re-branded their top level U15 and U18 AA squads under the Cornwall Royals name, as the Cornwall Lady Royals. They were formerly known as the U15 and U18 Cornwall Typhoons.
Coach Troy Brownell said that the name change was made to give their girls hockey players a legacy to aspire to.
“We want the younger girls to see the Lady Royals to give them something to strive for,” he said.
With 11 majors on the team, Assistant Coach Jason Woodside said that the team has performed well in the 2021-2022 hockey season and looks forward to the future.
“The second-year girls are right there,” said Woodside of the teams future prospects next season. “We are trying to push this program.”
The team performed well their first season under the new name, reaching the semi-finals which were played on Thursday, March 31.
Unfortunately, the Lady Royals lost to the Lady Sens in a close tightly fought 1-0 game. The Lady Sens themselves lost in the finals to the Nepean Wildcats 4-3.
