A splash of colour has been added to the South Lancaster Wharf thanks to a generous donation from Dulux Paints in Cornwall and the hard work of The Friends of the South Lancaster Wharf. The boathouses along the wharf were recently painted and a ribbon cutting was held on Friday, July 8th to unveil a fresh new look along the waterfront.
The Friends of the South Lancaster Wharf recently applied to Dulux Paints’ Colourful Communities Canada program, which is committed to beautifying neighbourhoods by providing an infusion of colour that makes a positive impact on the people who charities and non-profit organizations support. Glenn Bethune, a member of the Friends of the South Lancaster Wharf Executive Committee, recently retired as Manager of Dulux Paints in Cornwall.
Volunteers participated in a “Paint Day” at the end of June in order to complete the project. Prior to painting, permission was obtained from all boathouse owners to re-paint the structures. Dan Long Painting in Green Valley donated their services to pressure wash and prime all of the boathouses. Additionally, Tim Hortons South Lancaster donated coffee for the volunteers to enjoy throughout the day.
Other recent updates to the wharf include the addition of a floating dock and kayak launch, new garbage cans and picnic tables, painting of parking designation lines and a general clean up. Additionally, the retaining wall along the street going onto the wharf has been re-done. The South Lancaster Wharf is one of the few places that provides public access along the waterfront in South Glengarry and is well-used for swimming, fishing and community events.
