CORNWALL, Ontario – The puck will drop for the 14th Bishop Cup on March 11 at the Cornwall Civic Complex at 6 p.m.
The annual rivalry game between the St. Joes Panthers and the Holy Trinity Falcons senior hockey teams also serves as a fundraiser for the St. Vincent de Paul Society.
While the current win/ loss record of the Bishop’s Cup is 11-2 in favour of St. Joes, Thom Racine, one of the event organizers says that the Bishop’s Cup is more important that who wins and who loses on the ice.
“The game is bigger than the result,” he said. “My main goal was to create an atmosphere where kids can bring their kids to this game and keep the tradition alive. For the kids, this might be the biggest crowd they ever play in front of, so the excitement is there.”
Racine said that he’s been organizing the Bishop Cup for 14 years now and hopes to continue for a lot longer.
Last year, the Bishop Cup raised $2,000 for the St. Vincent de Paul Society. Racine is hoping for another good year on and off the ice.
“The best thing for the game would be to have Trinity win one,” he said. “You’d like to see both teams succeed. It creates the feeling of “see you next year!””
