CORNWALL, Ontario – Saturday was Hockey day in Cornwall as the Cornwall Police Services (CPS) hosted the seventh annual street hockey challenge took over a stretch of Montreal Rd., during the afternoon on Nov. 16.
“This is an event that’s been going on for seven years. It’s a three on three hockey challenge,” said Robin McIntosh, who spearheads the event alongside his colleagues at the CCPS. “We have kids from the Boys and Girls Club and different schools in the community.”
Kids sign up through their schools or the Boys and Girls Club prior to the event. This year welcomed 22 teams to the asphalt and brought out countless spectators lining the sidewalks.
“It’s all about community relations, getting in touch with the kids and we see parents out here too,” said McIntosh. “It’s always good to have the police interacting with the community.”
This year, prizes were awarded for the top teams. The first prize team earned $1500 for their school, and the second prize team won $1000. McIntosh said that the schools can freely decide how best to spend their winnings.
“This is all meant to just be an experience for these kids and give them the chance to play organized sports. At the end of the day, everyone gets a medal. Kids come out and have a good time and that’s what it’s all about,” said McIntosh.
