CORNWALL, Ontario – On Friday, Nov. 1, the annual Crafting a Cure event in support of the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF) took place at the Nav Centre.
There were roughly 420 in attendance to enjoy 18 beer vendors.
Event organizer Bill Makinson credited the work of committee volunteers Toby Legros and Jordan O’Brien for the work they did in getting all of the vendors to the event. This year’s edition of Crafting a Cure had the highest number of vendors that the event has ever seen.
Makinson was also happy to see a younger demographic attending the event this year.
“There was a really good mix and a lot of young people,” he said. “I spoke with a few who said they would be back next year.”
Makinson also praised the Nav Centre for their ongoing support of the event.
“The Nav Centre’s support took a lot off of the committee’s plate,” he said.
The event saw a spirited live auction hosted by professional auctioneer Peter Ross with highly sought after items including a signed jersey from Max Domi, and a signed hat from Montreal Canadiens goalie Carey Price.
In all, the event raised $23,000 for JDRF, which will support research into juvenile diabetes and help those who live with the disease.
Seaway News reporter Shawna O’Neill has lived with Type 1 diabetes since she was 10-years-old and sent a message of thanks to Bill Makinson.
“I just wanted to say thank you for hosting Crafting A Cure,” she wrote. “It means more to me than you realize that you kept it in the community. A lot of people don’t understand diabetes and don’t realize how expensive it is live with. It’s such a valuable event. I hope to be better and more involved next year.”
Makinson confirmed that the event will return again in 2020.
