The Induction Committee of the Cornwall Sports Hall of Fame has selected the Class of 2014 for Induction on August 16, 2014.
We are very happy with our list of Athletes and Builders, which includes four hockey players.
The selection committee received several new names for 2014, names that reach into the history of sports in our area.Some of our new class, not only played, but helped build their respective sports as well.
Please welcome our new class, of which, two of our athletes/builders will be inducted posthumously.
Tickets for the Benson Hall of Fame induction dinner will be $50 and details will follow.
Brian Tardiff – Builder Girls Hockey – A solid fastball player throughout his career in the CCSL & JDFL – Brian turned his talents to promoting and coaching the Girls Softball and Hockey programs into what they are today.
Roger Guevremont – Builder Curling – Roger has been involved as a volunteer in many sports organizing events and conducting clinics – 40 years of playing and helping to grow the game of curling – Roger spent countless hours helping our youth learn the game and started the school initiation program. He was the 2002 Lions Sportsman of the year.
Wayne MacDonald – Football – Wayne starred as a offensive lineman during his years at SLHS. After his Junior and University football career, Wayne became an Athletic director and coach at St. Francis Xavier University and was the Defensive co-ordinator at Acadia when they won the National Championship in 1981.
Jack Entwistle – Football/Builder (posthumously) Played HS football at SLHS 1952-1957 – Ottawa U Gee Gee. From 1958-1960, Jack played in QRFU as a member of the Cornwall Emards and helped start a team in Vankleek Hill – Key organizer in the development and helped grow minor football where Jack also coached for 20 years.
Bernard Racine – Broomball/Builder (posthumously) Pioneered the sport of Broomball in this area during the 1940’s and fifties. He built his own rink which allowed players to practice at all hours of the day. Bernie played in four decades & was known as the Jean Beliveau of the game displaying unparalelled stick handling ability.
Neil Gallinger – Softball – An elite fastball pitcher during the 1960’s. Neil began two different seasons by pitching two opening day No hitters and in 1980, during the end of his career pitched a perfect game in the competitive Sportsman League.
Cory Van Loon – Water Sports – Canoeing – Was the 1994 Jacques Richard Trophy winner – Corey won 12 Gold – 9 Silver & 1 Bronze medal(s) in National and World canoeing events during his career..
Tony Joseph – Hockey – Began playing the game at age 11, at the age of 15, Tony scored 33 goals,(63 points) for the Cornwall Minor Midgets and was drafted by the Oshawa Generals in the third round of the 1985 draft. He spent four years with the Oshawa Generals – scored a goal in his 2ndNHL game with Winnipeg, then spent five years AHL/IHL/SMLIIGA.
Ian MacInnis – Hockey/Builder -1982 was part of the (then) highest scoring line in OHL history with Doug Gilmour & Steve Driscoll – Signed by Chicago, Ian played one season in Peoria, before an injury ended his playing career. Took over the Colts franchise and led the Colts to the National Championship final in 2013 and was coach of Team Canada East 2013.
Marc Crawford – Hockey – Two time Memorial Cup winner, Marc captained the Royals in 1981. Scored over 200 points in 3 seasons and coached the Royals from 1989-1991. As coach of the Quebec Nordiqu, Crawford was the Jack Adams Trophy winner and his Avalanche won the Stanley Cup in 1996. Has coached in Vancouver, Los Angeles, Dallas and Zurich Switzerland.
Bob Currier – Hockey – A gifted skater, Bob was chosen 6th overall by the NHL’s Philadelphia Flyers in 1969, a draft that saw him drafted the same year and ahead of Bobby Clark – Bob went on to played five seasons on the AHL/CHL and WHL and was a key member of the Cornwall Hubs as they traveled the world as ambassadors for the city.
Brian Mulligan – Auto Sports/Builder – Track Announcer at the Cornwall Motor Speed way, member of the South Stormont Hall of Fame and the DIRT Hall of Fame. Tireless contributor to the success of Modified Stock Car racing in Cornwall.
